Northwest Couloirs(1st?)

The route up and down- anyone ever skied the NW side?
Christy boots up as the sun appears- Windom ahead to the right
Christy follows up the Red Couloir- Windoms' Widowmaker line behind
The last stretch involves a short crawl/tunnel section
The probe pole reaches- count it!
The hairy, airy traverse- NO FALLING!
Once all the way around, dropping into the NW couloirs
From above, the red line shows the exit back to Chicago basin and Twin Lakes- Eolus group in distance
More adventure than good skiing- still fun- arrow, vestal and west trinity can be seen

The morning began much like it did for Eolus, the day before. We were moving fast. Once we reached upper Chicago basin, we headed east towards Sunlight and Windom Peaks. Being Memorial Day Weekend there were others around and the boot tracks ran in several directions. There were people nearing the summit of Windom so we went to Sunlight first. In 2000 we skied the climbing route, the Red Couloir. From Eolus yesterday it appeared we could be more creative.

With the snow stacked up high near the summit block I couldn't quite ski from within a ski pole touch but rather a probe pole. That was the closest I've ever seen in pictures so I was good, and Christy followed. An incredibly airy side slip/traverse in the softening east facing snow high above Sunlight Lake was neeeded to make it to the notch that allowed us passage back around to the Red Couloir(S). Instead of dropping in to the south though, we traversed all the way around to the west side and dropped in, northwest— into upper Noname Creek. The snow was lousy but the feel was adventurous, there are three couloirs you can ski which all head down into the Noname Creek drainage, descending for miles.

So as to get Windom that day as well, after skiing down a ways we traversed to a pass that brought us back to Twin Lakes. Someday it would be fun to ski the line in its entirety, which seemed to go for miles, down to Noname Creek but we had a big afternoon still ahead of us so that would have to wait.

And we were headed to Windom.
